FAQ

What to you use to Edit your videos?

Lately I’ve been using Sony Vegas 9 Platinum Edition

What Hair Dye do you use?:

For my bright colors I use Special Effects brand hair dye. You can find it online. My Pink that you’ve seen is Atomic Pink or Cupcake Pink the purple is a mixture of Pimpin’ Purple and Blue Haired Freak. My reds have been Devilish and Blood Red. My black dye is from Wella I forget what color, but it’s black.

Does your hair get damaged with all of the dying?/Why does your hair look so healthy even though you dye it all the time?

My hair is straight, fine, & smooth/flat by nature, so bounces back from damage faster than most hair types. It is damaged, but not as much as /doesn’t show it as obvious as other hair types. It’s naturally dark-blond so when I bleach it I only leave the bleach on for about 15 minutes. I only re-touch the roots, so I’m not constantly bleaching my hair, and I only re-bleach about every 6-8 weeks. The black is tone-on tone, (level 10 developer) so only minor damage. The pink dye is completely non-damaging, in fact it makes it look healthier/shinier.

What Camera Do you use?

My first camera was a Olympus FE-208, then  in April 6, 2009 I got a Canon Powershot SD1100IS Digital ELPH. All videos after Feb 19 2011 will be shot with my Canon Rebel t2i

What Brand of Bleach won’t damage my hair?:

As far as I know  there is no such thing as beach or any other type of chemical lightening process with will not damage your hair in some way. The science behind this is too much for a FAQ, but suffice to say, it doesn’t exist. BUT I can tell you that I really like Prism Lites bleach powder with toner(like blue, or violet to minimize brassiness) added. I buy mine at Sally Beauty Supply

Should I use Blue or Violet toned bleach?:

Violet toned bleach neutralizes yellow tones, Blue does the same for orange/brassy tones. If you’re not sure what you need, Mix them!

Are You a makeup artist/Pro Makeup artist?

Yes, I am a makeup artist, though I’m only just starting my career. I haven’t worked in Hollywood, I don’t have 100 weddings under my belt, and I’ve never done a photo shoot (to date). But I work at a makeup store and put makeup on people all day long. I’ve done a few paid jobs for family and friends, that’s it. I don’t feel that makes me less of a makeup artist. A painter that’s never sold a painting is still a painter.

Did you go to school for makeup?

I never went to school for makeup. I’m a self-taught makeup artist, and I learned every thing I know through practice, and Youtube/Specktra/Makeupalley, and trial and error. I have no formal training, and until a few years ago, I was a black eyeliner and-out-the-door kinda gal. In 2005 I discovered MAC, and in 2007 I found makeup tutorials on youtube, and that’s when my journey to being a makeup artist began ^_^. It’s about practice, practice practice. Having an artistic eye, an understanding of color theory and balance doesn’t hurt either. I studied Fashion Design in high school, and went to school for Interior Design for a while. ^_^

How did you get so popular on youtube/any advice for someone starting out blogging/on youutbe?

The best advice I can give is to just be yourself. I did not start doing this with aspirations to become popular at all, so if that is your intention, then you are probably doing it for the wrong reasons. When I started making videos there were A LOT less people doing them, and I really was only doing them for kicks, since most of the people making videos/watching them were fellow makeup junkies.  The beauty community has grown/changed a lot in 3 years, and some of it has been good, some of it very, very bad. I’m hardly an over-night success, and I’m nowhere near as popular as some other top-gurus. My advice, is just be yourself, make the best videos you can, and don’t make enemies, LOL

Where Did you get that eyeshadow-palette thing-y?:

I got the 120, 88, and 28 neutral palette all on ebay. These are “brand less” palettes that are mass-produced in China. Please stop telling me I don’t have a “genuine” Coastal Scents Palette. No such thing exists. Coastal Scents simply sticks their name on it. For me (and most people) it’s simply cheaper to get these palettes on ebay. ^_^

What Lipstick/lipgloss/blush were you wearing in this video from a year and a half ago?:

Honestly, if a lot of time has past, I probably don’t remember. Also, on my older videos I used to list products, now I try to do that here on the blog. I’m really sorry that I can’t remember, because I know the feeling!

Can You do a Tutorial for my prom/dance/birthday/wedding/other specific event?:

Unfortunately I receive a lot of requests and I simply cannot do something that is so specific to one person. There’s a million makeup videos on youtube, I’m sure you’ll find one (or 17) that will suit your needs.

Could you please look at my profile, this pic, etc. and tell me what color hair I should dye my hair/what Cut I should do?

While I’m flattered that you’ve come to me for this advice, it’s simply too difficult to really know what would be flattering on someone thought a computer screen. Your best bet, is to gather pictures of what you’d like your hair to be cut like and take it to your stylist. They will be able to come up with something that will suit you!

Are you going to finish the Sailor Moon Series?:

YES! I love this series, and when I’m feeling uninspired it really helps me out. There will be 14 videos in all; Sailor Venus, Sailor Mercury, Sailor Mars, Sailor Jupiter, Sailor Saturn, Sailor Uranus, Sailor Neptune, Sailor Pluto, Luna, Artemis, Diana, Tuxedo Mask, Rini/Chibbi Moon, and Sailor Moon.

I can’t afford expensive makeup Brushes, what do you recommend?:

I really think that the Sonia Kashuk line of brushes from Target are great. I especially like the white handled ones for their affordability (1.99-9.99) and durability. They’re soft  and many of these are favorites of mine over more expensive brushes.  Another great inexpensive option if you’re looking for a kit is Sigma Makeup brushes. They are similar to MAC brushes, but they have their own twist, and are far less expensive.  I absolutely adore mine!

I can’t afford MAC Make up. What are some good Inexpensive Bands:

Just Because I use M.A.C or some other high-end brand DOES NOT mean that you have to/need to. There are a lot of cheaper alternatives out there, though M.A.C is my fave brand, so I use it a lot in my videos. If you want to, pay close attention when I describe a color so you can find something to suit you.

BEN NYE

NYX (their lipgloss with mega shine PWNS)

Beauty From the Earth

Milani(e/s singles and vanilla scented Lipsticks.)

Urban Decay (as expensive if not more so than MAC, but they have great deals on palettes)

Do you have any tips for girl who wear glasses?

See here’s the thing about that: every one has glasses that are shaped differently, and each person wears glasses on their face differently, so makeup for different styles of glasses will need to vary a lot.

Examples: some one who wears rimless glasses high on the bridge of their nose would require a different look that someone with thick rims who wears them…well anywhere. Also, someone who requires a lot of correction may have glasses that make their eyes look larger or smaller, and even the materials that your lenses are made out of can effect how your makeup goes on. When I wear my glasses I try to go light on the eye makeup, go for a full coverage foundation for a flawless face, and pop with a lip color. I also try to have funky eye wear to compensate for the over all lack of eye makeup.

I have a very old video about makeup for glasses. If I do want to wear funky
makeup, I try to do a pop of colored eyeliner ^_^

Also, It’s your face, and if you feel like rocking a full smoky eye and glasses, go for it!

I stumbled actross your eyelash tuturial and, not only did I find it helpful, but must say you have one of the most stunningly beautiful, symetrical and overall lovely faces ever! And I do not think I have ever seen better skin and would be hardpressed to find prettier eyes in color and shape. Good job on the tutorials! Keep it up.

First off, I would just like to tell you that I LOVE your YouTube videos, and second, I just bought my first eyeshadow palette off of ebay, and I was wondering if the no-name brands really can be trusted. (My mom was worried.)

Hi, I just watched your tutorial where you did three looks in one. Your last look was a pin up look that I loved. I wanted to go to that website you said http://www.mscuppycakes.com/ but i can’t find it, and nothing loads when I go to that address. Do you know if the site went down, or if it just the wrong url. Please let me know! I loved all your make up!

  11. Olivia says:

Hi, first off i’d just like to say your hair is awesome!

I’ve been wanting to dye my hair red for a while now, and i’m not sure how to go about it. I’ve heard so many different things, why not to bleach it, I should go to a salon, it’ll damage my hair and etc.

My hair is currently really dark brown/faded black. I did plan to bleach it, dye it light brown & then dye it red but i’m not sure now! Would the light brown hair dye be effected by the orange from the bleach?

What do you think it the best way to go from black to red? I think you’re the best person to ask so any advice you have i’ll be grateful!

    🙂

I’m no beauty guru, but I do my fair share of dying my hair. I recently dyed my hair red, and what I used was a hair color made specifically for dark hair. I got it at Sally Beauty Supply and it was pretty cheap. When I decide to dye my hair I always go to Sally’s and either speak to someone there or do some investigating myself. The employees there can help to show you what you need to develop the dye and what tools you’ll need as a home dyer. I hope this helps a little bit!

  12. Jennifer says:

Hello Cora! I first want to say that I love watching your tutorials and enjoy all your product reviews. They are very helpful. I recently dyed my hair red (like crayon red) and I absolutely love it. I love to be adventurous in my hair color and cuts. I know that from the videos I’ve watched of you that you had the same color red hair and transitioned to pink at some point. I’m wondering how you did that, and what products you used. I used a permanent color (red) from Sally’s specifically for dark hair (which I had at the time I dyed my hair). I eventually want to go pink and at some point purple. I do need to give my hair time to rest, but I was wondering in the mean time if you could give me any tips or maybe some products you used and liked. Thank you so much for all your help and thanks for being a true inspiration to so many apiring cosmetologists ❤

  13. I just want to say I came across your channel and you seem to be such a honest , fun loving person and you truly make the subscriber feel like you are doing this for them, not for popularity. You have inspired me to make my own channel. I am so nervous!!!

I know that you must be like super duper busy but I am wondering if you could give me some tips on decorating my page. I was wondering how did you get the picture up below your profile information on youtube? Also, how did you manage to put up the marquee. I don’t have one but maybe one day I will and wasn’t sure how to put it up there.

  14. Charlotte says:

I love all that you do! I’ve learned how to apply my makeup better now thanks to you! I was just wondering, in your haul vids about MAC collections, you’ve said a few times that you’re able to get MAC collections products before they come out, do you work at MAC or are you still with Sephora?

  15. Yoly says:

I want to ordet some lipstick online from MAC. Im just scared of paying $15 for the lipstick plus shipping than when i get it, its melted.

My question is have you ordered lipstick online? & was it melted?

    Help.. LoL

    BTW love your videos!!

  16. Ashleigh says:

Just followed the link here to your website from a long line of links from Youtube. Absolutely love your tutorials, your ideas and your backstory!

Living in New Zealand means that we don’t have too many over the top personalities to draw inspiration from and too many people are way to scared to put themselves out there in terms of make-up and fashion! Which brings me to my point, love the mantra:
Be Vintage or Tacky, Just be yourself.

With help from your tutorials, I am going to be the best version of myself.

    Thanks a million!

    Hi Cora!

Firstly, I think you’re amazing and I love your videos!

Secondly, although it may sound a little silly, how do you put your foundation on? A brush, sponge or airbrush? And what brand and shade?

    Thanks x

  24. Rosie O! says:

    Hi Cora! ❤
I have to say, i absolutely love your videos and how detailed your tutorials are. i'm somewhat of a tom-boy and you make being girly very easy for me ❤
i did have a question for you though: unfortunately for me, every foundation i've tried (no matter how little i put on) always looks very ashy and dry on my skin. i drink lots of water and when i dont wear make-up, my skin is fine. ive been on a mission to find the perfect foundation for quite some time, all i want is a nice foundation that will polish up my skin and make me look even toned.
any brands you recommend? the latest foundation ive tried is revlon's photo ready airbrush mousse foundation. help!

    • SolarSoda says:

Rosie O! – Are you using moisturizer on your skin before you apply foundation? If not I recommend trying that and see if that gives you better results. Get moisturizer based on your skin type: oily, combination, or dry. The brand really doesn’t matter, get what you can afford. (Make sure it’s facial moisturizer, not body moisturizer which is thicker and could make you break out.) You can use Oil of Olay or spend more at a department store skin care counter. Apply moisturizer after washing your face, wait around 10-15 minutes before applying foundation. If you are already using moisturizer then I would recommend trying a different foundation. I’ve found drug store brands tend to be more drying than more expensive brands, with the notable exception being Neutrogena Healthy Skin foundation which does what it claims and that is, it improves your skin!

There is also a thing out there called tinted moisturizer which is essentially foundation that is not as heavy as regular, straight-up “foundation”. However you can get the same effect if you simply mix your regular foundation with your moisturizer (a few drops of each in the palm of your hand), and that way you don’t have to spend EVEN MORE on something extra which is really meant for summer use anyway. That being said, with summer just now starting in 85% of the country, it wouldn’t be a total waste investing in a bottle of tinted moisturizer if you think you’re going to use it more often than not.

Cora, hope I’m not stepping on your toes here! Also I’m truly sorry if this has already been covered elsewhere in this amazing blog. 🙂

Feel free to email me if you have any more questions: sapsey72 [at] gmail [dot] com. ^.^

  26. Alisha says:

    Cora,
Just wanted to say thanks for creating your blog and videos. The past couple of years have been really rough. To be honest I’m a recovering addict and I’ve been trying to look for healthy productive things to do with my time, that’s when I came upon one of your tutorials on youtube. I wanted to send you a message to let you know that you are making a difference in the lives of those who watch. I do go to therapy, but makeup is my refuge. Thanks for simply being a friendly face when I need one.
    Much Love, Alisha

  27. Kari says:

I have some milani products. For example I have several colors of the INFINITE Liquid eye liner. I love the colors but… They take so long to dry I stand there with a stupid hair dryer facing my eyes to dry it, otherwise it smudges and makes a huge mess. ANY TIPS? or relatively smudge proof liner ? Also it gets tacky and sticky after it dries.
